ELK Studios has launched multiple successful slots series, ranging from the Gold series to the Nitropolis trilogy. But its first notable character was Sam, who debuted in 2014. ELK is now bringing back the electricity-loving troll nine years later in Book of Sam.
Almost every online slots developer has made one or more Book of games, so why not ELK Studios too? Of course, Book of slots are extremely common in the industry. We’ll discuss if Book of Sam brings anything original to the genre in the following review.
This slot features a common Book setup, with 5 reels and 10 paylines on a 5x3 grid. Winning combinations form when 2+ or 3+ matching symbols land in a payline, starting with reel 1. The 2+ matching combos are reserved for the higher-paying characters (covered later). If you’ve played Book of Dead or any similar slot, you’ll be well-versed with this gameplay style.
Book of Sam wins points for originality because it doesn’t take place in an ancient Egyptian pyramid. Instead, it features an Egyptian-style Las Vegas hotel, similar to Vegas’ Luxor. It also shows Sam’s wife, Sandra, and daughter, Maggie, wearing Cleopatra and Anubis costumes, respectively. All in all, we're impressed with the direction that ELK has taken the atmosphere.
Regular symbols include playing cards (A-10), a Bastet (cat god) statue, Sandra, Maggie, and Sam. You need 3+ matching symbols with the cards for wins, and only 2+ matches with the characters. Sam pays the most among regular symbols, offering up to 500x the stake for five matches. The maximum win is 10,000x your stake, which is above the industry average (roughly 5,000x).
The Book of Sam symbol acts as both the wild and scatter symbol. As a wild, the book substitutes for other symbols and delivers payouts worth up to 500x for five.
The default Book of Sam RTP is 94%, which is low for an online slot. Online casinos can choose an even lower setting at 87%, so be sure to check the pay table. You can wager anywhere from €0.20 to €100 per spin. Volatility is high because of multiple features and the 10,000x max win.
This game brings a mixture of common Book of features, along with a couple of unique elements. The latter include three Electric Treat modifiers, which are available in the base game and bonus. Free spins, meanwhile, have an expanding symbol just like other slots in this genre.

ELK Studios released Electric Sam in 2014 and the follow-up, Sam on the Beach, in 2017. We thought that the series might have fizzled out with the sequel being five years ago. However, ELK has revived the Sam line with a recent addition at the beginning of 2023.
Electric Sam introduced this series with a 5-reel, 243-ways format. Its features include sticky wilds, win multipliers, and cascading reels. It offers a 2,000x maximum win, which is small by today’s standards.
Sam on the Beach has the same 243-ways setup with cascading reels, sticky wilds, and win multipliers. It also brought stacked symbols into the series, and it offers a 2,275x max win.
Book of Sam features 5 reels and 10 paylines, along with an expanding symbol. All of this is to be expected, given that this game is a Book-of slot. The biggest change is the 10,000x win potential, which is definitely higher than the Electric and Beach slots.
We’re always impressed when a developer can add new wrinkles to the saturated Book genre. ELK Studios has done this through the theme (modern Vegas) and base game modifiers. It has also brought the Sam series current thanks to a 10,000x maximum payout.
The only drawback is the 94% RTP, which is two percentage points lower than the average online slot. Things get uglier if an online casino opts for the alternative 87% payout percentage. Again, you certainly want to visit the pay table and verify the 94% setting.
If you can stomach lower RTP, then Book of Sam is a very playable slot. It has a fun theme, plenty of features, and solid win potential. It’s even better if you like the older Sam slots and/or ELK Studios games in general.
