Developed by Play’n GO, The Last Sundown is a 5-reel slot that explores a dystopian future. In this scenario, Earth is a wasteland where only cyborg-like humans and animals thrive.
Offering up to 7,776 ways and a maximum win worth 36,000x the stake, The Last Sundown has an interesting math model. We’ll discuss if it features any other notable qualities in the following review.
This 5-reel game offers anywhere from 243 to 7,776 ways to win. Symbols can split (explained later), which leads to extra ways.
Winning combinations occur when 3+ matching symbols appear in adjacent reels. All payouts have to start in the first reel.
The Last Sundown comes with an interesting backstory. Devin and Rae are the main characters and, coincidentally, the most-normal-looking people in this tale. They must defeat the bad guys, Lauro and Tuco, to get their resources back and survive.
The background shows a desolate and sunburnt landscape. Dilapidated metal buildings dot the backdrop along with a large view of the sun.
These lands appear inhospitable for the average being. We imagine this is the reason for the humans and dog having a cyborg element to them.
A futuristic gun, grenade, hatchet, knife, and pistol serve as the lowest-paying symbols. Devin, Rae, Lauro, Tuco, and a cyborg dog are the higher-paying icons.
The highest-paying normal symbol delivers 5x the stake for five icons. As mentioned before, you can win up to 36,000x your stake when accounting for features.
This slot also offers a wild symbol that substitutes for other icons to form winning combinations. The wild delivers payouts of its own too worth up to 5x the bet.
You can wager between €0.10 and €50 per spin. This range allows for jackpots going from €3,600 (0.1 x 36,000) to €1.8 million (50 x 36,000).
The Last Sundown RTP is 96.2% by default. However, Play’n GO lets operators choose settings as low as 84.2%. That said, you want to be on guard and check the pay table to avoid lower payback.
Play’n GO rates the volatility at 8 out of 10. We’re surprised that the volatility isn’t 10 out of 10 when looking at the massive top prize.
Most online slots that feature huge maximum wins are loaded with features. The Last Sundown, however, takes a simpler approach with just Splitting Symbols and free spins. The free spins do come with an added wrinkle, though, in the form of a collection system.
This feature can trigger during any base-game spin. Splitting Symbols randomly selects one symbol to do the splitting. All instances of this icon then split into two and boost the ways to win.
You’ll trigger 8 free spins when landing 3+ scatters (med kit) anywhere on the reels. In addition to free games, you also get a scatter payout worth 5x (three symbols), 10x (four), or 50x (five) the stake.
Before the bonus begins, one symbol is randomly picked to be the Splitting Symbol. Another icon is chosen to become the collection symbol. The latter can become a Splitting Symbol by landing enough times on the reels.
You’ll need to collect 4 symbols for the wild, 5 for the characters, and 6 for the weapons. Every time that you fill an icon’s collection counter, you’ll receive +3 free spins along with the new Splitting Symbol.
The Last Sundown is loosely based on Play’n GO’s Shimmering Woods. The latter also features up to 7,776 ways and Splitting Symbols. It boasts a big max payout worth up to 25,000x your stake.
However, Shimmering Woods differs somewhat regarding its bonus round. This game awards Splitting Symbols based on how many scatter symbols you get—not through a collection system. It also offers cascading wins, whereas The Last Sundown doesn’t.
Of course, the biggest difference between these games is their themes. Shimmering Woods is about a secret forest cove that’s filled with crystals. This storyline is quite different than the apocalyptic wasteland that is Last Sundown.
This game is interesting from a mathematical perspective. It manages to offer a giant 36,000x maximum payout without being overly volatile (8/10). It also does so without throwing too many features into the mix.
The Last Sundown is the perfect game to play for chasing big wins without confusing gameplay involved. It’s also not as brutal on your bankroll as the max prize might suggests.
If you like lots of features, though, then you won’t get that with The Last Sundown. This game is almost as simple as the Book of line from Play’n GO.
Provided you’re okay with fewer features, though, then you should definitely appreciate The Last Sundown. Its win potential and graphics make for an entertaining experience.
