Play’n GO has been fascinated with ancient Egypt ever since they launched the famed Rich Wilde adventure, Book of Dead in 2016. They’ve released plenty of similar slots, thus leading to the “Book of” term used to describe these games.
This time around, Play’n GO is ditching the book, as well as Rich Wilde, and going with a scroll in Scroll of Dead. On the surface, Scroll of Dead looks like other Book of slots. As you’ll find out, though, it presents an interesting feature that sets it apart.
Scroll of Dead starts with a 5-reel, 10-payline setup—a commonality for the Book of line. However, it differs by adding a 6th reel when you unlock free spins (covered later). A padlock covers this reel until it’s unlocked.
You form winning combinations by landing either 2+ or 3+ matching symbols in a payline. The high-value symbols only require 2 icons for a win.
If you’re experienced with Play’n GO games, then you won’t have any trouble telling which developer this slot comes from. Scroll of Dead takes place in a richly colored Egyptian tomb with pillars and torches in the background.
The only thing that’s missing is Rich Wilde, or his daughter, Cat Wilde. Other than this father-daughter duo taking an adventure off, everything about Scroll of Dead looks like a Play’n GO slot.
When you trigger the bonus, the backdrop turns red and the flames become blue. Hidden hieroglyphics also show up on the columns.
Low pays include stylized royals ranging from A through 10. High-paying symbols include an ankh, bird, cobra, and Cleopatra.
The Queen of the Nile pays the most among this group at 500x your bet for five symbols. She can deliver up to 750x for six when you unlock the sixth reel.
This slot pays up to 7,500x your stake when accounting for features. You need Cleopatra to fill every reel to achieve this prize (750 x 10).
A scarab beetle acts as both the wild symbol and scatter. As the wild, it substitutes for regular symbols to form wins.
Unlike many slots, Scroll of Dead provides the ability to change paylines from 1-10. You can also adjust the coin size from €0.01 to €1 per line.
When combining these options, you can wager between €0.01 and €100 per spin. A €750,000 jackpot (100 x 7,500) is possible at the top end of this range.
The default Scroll of Dead RTP is 96.28%. However, operators can choose RTP settings worth 94.28% or less. You can check the pay table to see the given payout percentage.
Play’n GO rates the volatility at 9 out of 10. Therefore, you should be prepared for an unpredictable journey through this Egyptian temple.
Scroll of Dead offers free spins, scatter payouts, and a gamble option. These features are rather common, but the free spins do involve a few twists.
You trigger 8 free spins by landing at least 3+ scatters (scarab) anywhere on the reels. You’ll also receive a scatter payout worth 2x (three scatters), 20x (four), or 200x (five) your total stake.
At the beginning of the bonus, 1 symbol is randomly chosen to become the expanding symbol. The expanding symbol both expands to cover its respective reel and delivers scatter-like payouts. Regarding the latter, the expanding icon offers payouts across non-adjacent reels.
The aforementioned 6th reel is active throughout the bonus. Therefore, you can look forward to larger wins during free spins. Here are the max payouts that are available for each symbol during the bonus:
You can activate the gamble feature following any win. This option lets you either guess a card’s color (2x your payout) or suit (4x your payout).
You can gamble up to 5 times before being taken back to the main game. Of course, you’re also able to quit the gamble feature at any time.
At this point, it’s hard for Play’n GO to introduce something wildly different to the Book of series. They’d risk upsetting the formula that has brought them so much success.
This developer has, however, done a good job of making Scroll of Dead stand out from the pack. The 6th reel helps set this game apart from Book of Dead, Amulet of Dead, Cat Wilde and the Lost Chapter, Doom of Dead, and so forth.
Scroll of Dead also exceeds the maximum payout of 5,000x the stake that’s common in these types of games. It provides a slightly larger max win worth 7,500x your stake.
Other than these changes, Scroll of Dead plays just like similar games. It too features free spins with expanding symbols and a default 5-reel, 10-line setup.
Play’n GO isn’t a one-trick pony, but this developer does like coming back to ancient Egypt frequently. Scroll of Dead is yet another adventure into ominous Egyptian tombs.
This time around, though, Play’n GO adds a variation with the 6th reel. The extra reel keeps Scroll of Dead from feeling like a Book of reskin.
This game also manages to avoid the trap of being wildly different from big hits like Book of Dead. It’s an easy introduction to the concept of unlocking a 6th reel.
Of course, Novomatic’s Book of Ra Deluxe 6 already introduced a 6th reel years ago. The difference, though, is that Book of Ra Deluxe 6 requires making an additional bet to unlock the extra reel.
In summary, Scroll of Dead may not strike you as wildly different from other slots in this genre. It does, however, provide just enough changes to warrant a try. If you like these types of games, then you should definitely consider giving Scroll of Dead a chance.
