Elk Studios’ new online slot Coba might seem like a misspelling of cobra. However, it’s based in an ancient Mayan city of the same name. Coba is a 7x7 grid slot with explosive payouts going up to 25,000x the stake. You can learn more about this game, including its Snake Progress Meter, in the following Coba slot review.
This game features a grid with seven rows and seven reels (7x7). Winning combinations form when 5+ matching symbols create a cluster. Symbols from wins vanish and lead to an avalanche effect, whereby icons roll into the vacant spaces. Avalanches continue so long as the wins keep coming.
As for the theme, Coba takes you deep into a South American jungle. It shows worn city walls on both sides and a dense jungle and pyramid in the distance.
Regular symbols include three animal-printed coins, three gems, and a golden snake skull coin. The gold snake coin pays 500x the stake for a cluster of 15+ symbols. As mentioned before, you can win up to 25,000x with features included.
You can bet anywhere from €0.20 to €100 per spin. The Coba slot RTP is 95.0%, which is below average. Its hit rate is 38.9%, meaning you’ll win approximately 40% of your spins. ELK Studios rates the volatility at 6/10, which is surprising given the 25,000x max win.
Besides avalanches, Coba slot has Snake and Crossing features. It also provides an opportunity to buy bonuses through ELK’s patented X-iter options.
You’ll see the Snake Progress Meter on the right-hand side of the reels. Winning clusters fill this meter and advance you up levels. The Snake Progress Meter has four levels in all, including the following:
A snake is a linear cluster that moves alongside the reels. It’s at least 5 symbols long and can either deliver its own wins or attach to another cluster pay. Snakes become a specific symbol and eat the same type of symbols, thus growing into bigger payouts.
They “die” when either crossing their own body or failing to eat a similar symbol. Snakes disappear from the grid after dying.
When two snakes cross paths, they activate the Crossing feature. Crossing leaves a 2x wild multiplier in the position where the snakes intersect. Any snake that slithers across this position will double the wild multiplier (e.g. 2x becomes 4x). Multiplier wilds will multiply each other when appearing in the same win.
Coba slot comes with the following five X-iter options:
Coba uses the same “gravity” effect as in ELK Studios’ Cygnus and Io. The gravity mechanic refers to how symbols roll downward into vacant spaces, like they would in real life. One key difference, though, is that Cygnus and Coba feature 6 reels and 4,096 ways. Compare this setup to the 7x7 grid and cluster pays in Coba.
ELK Studios has done a fine job of producing an original slot about Mayan culture. This is no easy feat either, considering that many Mayan or Aztec slots exist throughout the industry.
We like how Coba incorporates the theme into the features. Snake not only represents the Mayan god Quetzalcoatl but also the path towards multiplier wilds. You can collect serious wins if the snakes cross and boost the multipliers.
If you’re bankroll conscious, you may appreciate the 6/10 volatility rating. Most medium-volatility games like this don’t provide an opportunity to win 25,000x your stake. The only notable downside is the 95% RTP. You may not notice the subpar RTP, though, due to the 38.9% hit frequency.
All in all, Coba is a quality online slot that brings something different to the South American jungle. We strongly recommend that you give Coba at least one try.
Coba was released on July 5 2022.
