Developed by ELK Studios, Katmandu X is a different take on ELK’s Katmandu Gold. The latter is part of the Gold series, featuring the slots adventurer Kane. Katmandu X is more of a general game about the Nepalese capital, which is famous for its religious monuments and mountains. This game features six reels and six rows (6x6 grid) with a cluster pays mechanic. You need to land a cluster of 5+ matching symbols to get a win.
The atmosphere revolves around a remote temple in the snowy mountains. It’s nearly the same setting as Katmandu Gold, except for a few minor tweaks. Most notably, this slot features a pagoda roof in the foreground and different columns. In any case, Katmandu X has a nice atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re actually in the Nepalese mountains.
Low pays consist of mystical shapes in blue, green, purple, and red colors. Premiums include golden depictions of an eagle, cougar, dragon, and phoenix. The latter pays the most among regular symbols at 100x the stake for a 16+ cluster. The maximum win is 25,000x your stake when taking features into account.
A purple gem serves as the wild symbol and substitutes for all regular icons to form wins. As explained later, it comes into play during avalanche wins too.
The Katmandu X RTP is 95.0%, which is low compared to many online slots. Volatility is high when considering the plentiful features (covered next) and 25,000x max win.
You can wager between €0.20 and €100 per spin. This game also has the X-iter options that are in many other ELK Studios slots.
Katmandu X combines avalanches and multiple wild symbols to create larger wins. It also includes multipliers, Wild Strike, Big Symbols, and two bonus rounds.
Each win causes the winning symbols to disappear and a wild symbol to materialize. If two or more wilds help form a win, they combine into one wild with a multiplier.
This slot also features exploding wilds, which blow up symbols in their vicinity. The explosion takes out several positions and causes a redrop.
Additionally, any symbol that helps form the win or gets blown up increases the overall win multiplier. This multiplier applies to all wins onscreen and not just individual clusters, like with the wild version. The overall multiplier can continue increasing until the end of a round, at which point it resets.
This feature can happen randomly and turn regular symbols into wilds, multiplier wilds, and/or exploding wilds.
Different from regular symbols (1x1), Big Symbols can come in 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4 sizes. For payout purposes, these symbols count as 1x1 icons. For example, a 3x3 Big Symbol would include nine individual icons. Big Symbols crush regular 1x1 icons during a drop, but they don’t crush special symbols (e.g., wilds, multipliers).
You trigger the standard bonus round by landing 3+ regular scatters. The advantage of this bonus is that the overall multiplier doesn’t reset until you’ve played through all free drops. You’ll earn more drops when getting special Yin & Yang symbols on the grid.
The Super Bonus triggers when 3 bonus symbols land, including at least one Super scatter. Alternatively, you’ll trigger this round by getting just one Super symbol in the standard bonus round. The advantage to super free drops is that one Super Wild Strike is guaranteed in every round. The Super Wild Strike transforms multiple normal symbols into exploding wilds or multipliers.

Again, this game relates closely to Katmandu Gold in terms of looks and atmosphere. The two online slots are almost identical, except with a couple of changes in Katmandu X. The X version does have a different gameplay model (cluster pays) and higher max win (25,000x vs 10,000x).
ELK Studios’ Propaganda relates more closely to Katmandu X regarding gameplay and features. Propaganda also has a 6x6 grid, cluster pays, Wild Strike, and two bonuses.
Katmandu X is basically a reskin of Katmandu Gold with Propaganda’s gameplay. This type of move can be dangerous and make it seem like a developer is getting lazy. However, ELK has successfully pulled off this maneuver to create a solid game.
Katmandu X slot takes the best of Propaganda and adds more with multiple wilds and Big Symbols. It also offers higher win potential than Katmandu Gold and Propaganda (both 10,000x).
The main downside is that Katmandu X has lower RTP than the Gold version (96.2%). Of course, it’s not the first online slot to offer 95% RTP or less.
In summary, Katmandu X is a quality game that upgrades some elements of both Propaganda and Katmandu Gold. It’s cheerier than the former and has larger win potential than the latter. That said, you should find Katmandu X entertaining, especially if you like chasing larger wins.
