Thunder Screech is a 5-reel, 10-payline slot from Play’n GO. It features a combination theme that includes both animals and Native American artifacts. Playn GO initially named this game Thunderbird Strike. However, they changed it to Thunder Screech at the last minute—presumably to avoid any copyright issues with other “Thunderbird” related slots.
This game falls into a long line of slots that deal with the tribal/wildlife combo theme. Does Thunder Screech bring anything new to the subject? We’ll answer this question while discussing what this slot offers regarding features, win potential, graphics, and more.
Thunder Screech spreads five reels and 10 paylines across a 5x3 grid. It offers a basic gameplay model, where wins form when 3+ matching symbols land in a payline.
The atmosphere is similar to many other slots from this genre. It features evergreens, orange trees, rocks, grass, and mountains. The orange trees suggest that the season is fall.
The reels are encased by wood carvings, which look like eagles. This touch really completes Thunder Screech’s tribal look.
Much of the atmosphere that we’ve covered so far is common for games like this. However, Thunder Screech does feature unique animals, including a beaver, crow, and skunk.
Similar slots usually focus entirely on buffalos or wolves. You may appreciate Thunder Screech’s originality if you’re tired of playing the same ole’ buffalo-themed games.
Low-paying symbols include royals (A-10) made out of wood. High pays consist of various animals, including a beaver, crow, fox, otter, and skunk.
The crow pays the most among this bunch at 75x your stake for five symbols. You can win up to a maximum of 5,000x your stake when including features.
A wooden eagle serves as the wild symbol. Appearing only on reel 3, it substitutes for all regular icons to complete winning combinations.
The betting range runs from €0.10 to €100. The Thunder Screech RTP is 96.2%, which is slightly above average.
Play’n GO rates the volatility at 6/10. This is a lower volatility rating compared to some of Play’n GO’s more-recent slots. You should net a fair amount of wins as a result.
A couple of Thunder Screech’s bonuses revolve around wild symbols. Another feature offers free spins with a twist.
Available in the base game, “Call” randomly adds between 5 and 9 wild symbols on the middle three reels. It happens more frequently than any other feature.
“Strike” is a random feature in the base game and bonus that upgrades all wild symbols to “Thunder Wilds.” A Thunder Wild awards respins and becomes sticky.
These wilds also come with a win multiplier. The latter begins at 1x and increases by 1x following each respin. The multiplier tops out at 3x, at which point the relevant Thunder Wild disappears.
Assuming two Thunder Wilds appear in a win together, then their multipliers are added together. Their added value tops out at 9x.
New Thunder Wilds that land on the reels can keep this bonus going. The feature ends when no more of these wilds are present.
You trigger 5 free spins when landing dream catcher symbols (scatters) on reels 1, 3, and 5. All wilds become Thunder Wilds during this bonus. Each free spin will include at least one Thunder Wild and, thus, offer multipliers through the Strike feature.
Dream catchers don’t appear during free spins. Therefore, you have no chance to retrigger free games.
This game draws comparisons to many slots that go with the tribal/North American wildlife angle. Rival Gaming’s Thunderbird is one similar game that comes to mind. Although more cartoonish in appearance, it heavily focuses on the tribal artifacts.
Nolimit Citys Buffalo Hunter comes even closer to Thunder Screech’s theme. It revolves around both Native American artifacts and buffalos.
This slot doesn’t offer the high volatility or big wins that some players love. Therefore, it won’t appeal to everybody. However, Thunder Screech does perform well in a few areas.
First off, it differs from other games that cover the same subject matter. Thunder Screech isn’t just another wildlife/tribal slot that centers on wolves. Instead, it puts a variety of less-common animals on the reels.
Thunder Screech also does a good job of balancing the features. You’ll enjoy both random wilds and Thunder Wilds in the base game. You can trigger free spins, which also include Thunder Wilds.
The graphics and atmosphere are solid in this game. You’ll get a nice glimpse of rural North America in the fall.
In summary, Thunder Screech won’t amaze you with its payouts or volatility. However, it’s an enjoyable slot that can be entertaining for an hour or so.
