Released in 2013, Gonzo’s Quest became an instant hit thanks to its high-quality graphics, avalanche pays, and interesting theme. NetEnt didn’t touch this work of perfection until 2020, when they launched Gonzo’s Quest Megaways (via Red Tiger Gaming).
In 2021, NetEnt released Gonzo’s Quest Treasure Hunt—a live casino game. Now, they’re back to dropping more slots in this series with Gonzo’s Gold. The latter is a grid/cluster-pays slot that takes Gonzo inside of an ancient temple. You can see if Gonzo’s Gold is a worthy addition to the series in the following review.
This slot features a 5x5 grid with cluster pays. You score wins by forming clusters of either 3+ premium or 4+ low-paying symbols.
Previous versions of Gonzo’s Quest take place in a dense South American jungle. This game, however, sees Gonzo finally locate the Lost City of El Dorado.
The background shows a cavernous golden chamber that’s complete with a few gold columns. The 5x5 grid lies between the two middle columns.
This game represents the first time that Gonzo isn’t seen onscreen. Normally, he stands off to the side and acts as a cheerleader of sorts.
Due to the absence of the jungle and beloved conquistador, you may feel like this slot isn’t quite Gonzo enough. It’s still a decent game, though, from a visual standpoint.
Low-paying symbols include stylized royals ranging from A to 10. Higher pays include three Aztec masks and Gonzo.
The latter pays up to 6,500x your stake for a cluster of 25 symbols (a full grid). This payout is also the maximum that can be won in the game.
You can wager between €0.10 and €200 per spin. This betting range allows for jackpots going from €500 (0.1 x 5,000) to €1 million (200 x 5,000).
The Gonzo’s Gold RTP is 96.11% by default but can be lower depending on the casino. The volatility is medium, which is a bit lower than expected. Many slots with a 6,500x max prize have medium-to-high volatility.
Unlike many grid slots, Gonzo’s Gold doesn’t have cascading reels (a.k.a. tumbling reels). Instead, what you see is what you get after the symbol drop.
Gonzo’s Gold is thin on features in general. However, you can look forward to some big potential payouts when triggering free spins.
You unlock free games by landing 3+ temple scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. You’ll receive 10 free spins along with a scatter payout worth 2x (three scatters), 20x (four), or 200x (five) your stake.
This bonus begins with a pick’em round. You select a question mark to reveal the special expanding symbol.
Assuming 2+ expanding symbols land adjacently, they expand to cover a reel or row. You’ll receive an automatic cluster win when this happens.
You can retrigger the bonus by getting another 3+ scatters. You’ll again receive 10 free spins along with the relevant scatter prize.
Gonzo’s Quest is still a quality game by today’s standards. After nearly a decade of success, though, it needed some kind of shakeup.
With the help of Red Tiger, NetEnt instituted a revamping with the Megaways version in 2020. Gonzo’s Quest Megaways offers up to 117,649 ways along with some new features. The latter include all low pays disappearing (a.k.a. Earthquake) and a larger avalanche multiplier.
Gonzo’s Treasure Hunt is kind of unrelated because it’s a live casino game with a presenter. It still features Gonzo—standing opposite the presenter—along with the same atmosphere, but its gameplay is different.
NetEnt has gone back to slots with Gonzo’s Gold. The latter is the first game in the series to offer a grid with cluster pays.
The win potential isn’t quite as high as with the Megaways game (21,000x). However, Gonzo’s Gold does offer a bigger top payout than the original Gonzo’s Quest (1,875x).
This game is certainly different than anything else in the Gonzo genre. It’s a grid slot that gets rid of the avalanche feature from the previous slots.
We don’t necessarily think that the result is a total win. Gonzo’s Gold doesn’t feature the hero himself nor does it have the same jungle feel. Outside of the title, you might not even know this game is related.
If you’re a fan of the Gonzo series, then you probably won’t be thrilled with this slot. It lacks the same charms and features that have made the Quest and Megaways versions into hits.
Nevertheless, Gonzo’s Gold is still decent by industry standards. It’s not bad if you’re looking for a new cluster-pays slot to fire up.
