The Nitropolis series started as gang warfare between anthropomorphic animals competing for nitro fuel. In Nitropolis 4, the story has transitioned to three of the clans living by the sea. The Gritty Kitties, Pug Thugs, and Rogue Rats are now working together at a plant where they produce nitro fuel.

Since its inception, the series has been characterized by its unique storyline and plentiful features. You can see if Nitropolis 4 lives up to the other slots in these areas below.

Gameplay and Atmosphere

The default Nitropolis 4 setup features 6 reels and 4,096 ways on a 6x4 grid. However, the number of ways can be much higher when the grid expands through avalanches (covered later). Wins normally form when 3+ matching symbols land in adjacent reels, starting with reel 1. But you can activate a Both Ways mechanic, which delivers wins starting in reel 1 or 6.

This game’s setting is a production plant, with controls in the foreground and advanced machinery in the background. Trigger the bonus, and you’ll head underwater for a nitro-extracting mission.

Payouts and Max Win Potential

Regular symbols include card values (A-J), four clan emblems, and four gang members. The highest-paying clan character delivers 3x your stake for six symbols. You can win as much as 50,000x the stake when including features.

A mine acts as the wild symbol and will substitute for regular symbols to create payouts. It also offers prizes of its own, including 3x for six matching symbols.

RTP, Volatility and Betting Options

The Nitropolis 4 RTP is 94.0% with no alternative settings available. Volatility is high, which is a given due to the 50,000x max payout. You can wager between €0.20 and €50 per spin and use X-iter options, which we’ll discuss later.

Game Features

Nitropolis 4 is no different from its predecessors in terms of features. It comes loaded with extras, including avalanches, big symbols, Nitro Reels, Nitro Multipliers, Nitro Boosters, and free spins.

Avalanches

Symbols from wins disappear, allowing icons from above to fall into their open spaces. Every avalanche also adds an extra reel to the grid and, subsequently, more ways. You can max the grid out at 8 rows (6x8) through 4+ avalanches. The avalanche feature continues until no more wins are possible.

Nitro Reels

A Nitro Reel provides 4, 6, 8, 10, or 12 symbols within two positions. Just like avalanches, Nitro Reels increase the number of available ways.

Nitro Multiplier

A Nitro Multiplier also takes up two positions, but it only consists of one symbol. It multiplies all visible wins by 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x, or 12x. If two or more Nitro Multipliers appear, they’ll multiply each other (e.g., 6x times 10x = 60x multiplier).

Nitro Booster Modifiers

Two display screens hang above the reels, and these can deliver Nitro Boosters. The eight available Nitro Booster modifiers include:

• Both Ways – Activates the Both Ways mechanic, which pays from left to right and right to left.
• Garbage Collect – Removes symbols from the reels randomly, which results in an avalanche.
• Max Rows – Automatically expands the grid to the maximum 8 rows (6x8).
• Max Rows – Automatically expands the grid to the maximum 8 rows (6x8).
• Nitro Appear – Places a Nitro Reel on the grid, which can be anywhere from 4–12 symbols in size.
• Nitro Match – If possible, an existing Nitro Reel matches with another symbol to deliver a payout. If this isn’t possible, the Nitro Reel will match with a neighboring Nitro Reel. Another alternative is that the Nitro Reel will match with the best-paying adjacent symbol. Assuming none of these scenarios are possible, this feature remains until it satisfies one of the above conditions or the round ends.
• Nitro Upgrade – This modifier boosts the value of a Nitro Reel, or it remains until a Nitro Reel finally becomes available.
• Nitro Wild – Fills a Nitro Reel with wild symbols, or it waits until a Nitro Reel lands on the grid.
• Redrop – Once avalanches stop, this feature holds Nitro Reels and bonus symbols in place while replacing every other symbol.

Super & Mega Symbols

Nitropolis 4 offers two types of big symbols, including Super (2x2) and Mega (3x3) versions. All regular symbols and the wild mine can appear as a big symbol. Also note that “Big Nitro Reels” can hold Super Symbols. These special reels cover six positions and provide 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 Super icons.

Free Spins

You trigger 8, 12, 16, or 20 free spins by landing three, four, five, or six bonus symbols. This bonus features sticky Nitro Reels throughout the duration of free spins. It also sees each win boost the “Safety Level” by one row on the next round. If the Safety Level increases to 6 rows, for example, then the grid can’t go any lower than this amount.

Super Free Spins

You unlock this version by landing a Super Bonus symbol during regular bonus round. The Super Bonus features Both Ways and Max Rows on every free spin.

X-iter Options

The following X-iter betting options are available at any point in the base game:

• Bonus Hunt (2x the stake) - Doubles your chances of triggering free spins.
• Nitro Booster (10x the stake) - Provides a spin with two random Nitro Booster modifiers.
• Super Spin (25x the stake) - Activates Both Ways and Max Rows for one spin.
• Free Spins (100x the stake) - Automatically triggers regular free spins in the next round.

How Does this Game Compare to the Nitropolis Series?

Nitropolis exploded onto the scene in 2020 with a plethora of features and over 85 million ways. It also introduced the unique theme and Nitro Reels concept that are still in play today. But its win potential—10,000x the stake—isn't as high for a slot with 85 million ways as you’d think.

Nitropolis 2 expanded the number of possible ways to over 191 million and introduced Nitro Booster modifiers. Despite the new features and numerous ways, this game still only offers above-average win potential at 10,000x.

The third edition, Nitropolis 3, brought the animal gangs to a beach setting and introduced Safety Levels. More importantly, it increased the win potential to a whopping 50,000x the stake.

The fourth version has much more in common with Nitropolis 3 than the other two games. Nitropolis 4 still takes place at the beach and provides a 50,000x max win. It also has Nitro Boosters, although a few more than the third game. Garbage Collect, Max Rows, and Nitro Appear are all new modifiers.

Final Thoughts on Nitropolis 4 Slot

The huge changes from game to game have slowed down in this series. The differences between Nitropolis 3 and 4 mainly amount to extra Nitro Boosters in the latter. That said, you shouldn’t expect anything dramatically different in the latest game—although we’re not complaining.

ELK Studios appears to be using the concept of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ The first three online slots have largely been successes, so why rock the boat too much?

We agree with ELK’s approach and think that Nitropolis is another playable game in the series. Our main gripe is the 94% RTP, which is really low for a newer online slot. Other than this, though, Nitropolis 4 is a high-quality game that should keep the series rolling.
