NetEnt released Narcos slot almost three years ago in April 2019. It has since passed the series torch to subsidiary Red Tiger, which is releasing Narcos Mexico.
These NetEnt and Red Tiger games are based on the Narcos Netflix series, which has run for three seasons so far. Narcos: Mexico is actually a companion series that will be entering season 1.
This might all sound confusing if you’ve never watched an episode. Simply put, Red Tiger’s Narcos Mexico is a slot about international drug lords operating in the 1980s.
This game features 5 reels and 243 ways going across a 5x3 grid. You earn wins when 3+ matching symbols land in adjacent reels (beginning w/ reel 1).
Narcos Mexico takes place outside of a drug lord’s mansion. It features cars, palm trees, and a dirt road in the background. By contrast, the original Narcos takes you to the city streets of Medellin, Columbia.
Regular symbols include royals (A-9) and four cartel members. The high-paying cartel boss delivers 5x your stake for five matching symbols. You can win up to 10,486x the stake when everything goes just right.
A wild symbol (drug package) substitutes for regular pays to form wins. It only lands on reels 2, 3, and 4.
You can wager from €0.10 to €10 per spin, with the maximum bet being quite low. The Narcos Mexico RTP is 95.7%, which is slightly below average. The volatility is medium-to-high.
This slot boosts your payouts through Supply Drop, Double Cash, Win Exchange, and Cartel Spins. The latter offers unique symbols that perform special functions.
This feature sees an airplane fly over the reels and drop wild symbols in random positions.
Triggered randomly after a win, Double Cash doubles the win. If you win 10x your stake, for example, this feature boosts the payout to 20x.
You can exchange any payout worth 100x the stake, or higher, for 3 Cartel Spins. Assuming you win between 30x and 99x, you can gamble for free spins. Your chances of winning the gamble increase with a larger payout.
This bonus triggers naturally—rather than through Win Exchange—when 3 scatters land on reels 1, 3, or 5. Cartel Spins happen on a 10x10 grid, with a cartel member in each corner. The remaining positions can display a blank, airplane, phone, or Mystery Territory symbol.
Assuming a plane, phone, or Mystery Territory icon lands next to a cartel member, they’ll become sticky and reset the spins to 3. They will also offer modifiers as follows:
New symbols landing next to already active ones enhance the effects covered above. Additionally, the cartel members can fight over territory when active symbols touch. The member with the most territory wins the fight. This bonus continues until you either run out of spins, hit the max win, or fill every space.
NetEnt retained the original look and feel from Narcos to Narcos Mexico. Both games also feature 5-reel, 243-ways setups.
Narcos’ features differ slightly from the Mexico sequel. It offers symbol transformations (Drive-by), random prizes (Locked Up), and free spins with slightly different special symbols.
The key difference, though, comes in the win potential. Narcos only offers a 1,506x max win, which cost it in the review ratings department. Mexico, meanwhile, delivers payouts worth up to 10,486x.
Red Tiger has done an excellent job of keeping Narcos’ best qualities while adding more to Narcos Mexico. The latter is a more-volatile, exciting trek into the dangerous underground cartel business.
The sequel’s animations aren’t quite as gripping as the first game. Nevertheless, the volatility and win potential more than make up for the lesser animations.
We tip our hat to NetEnt for its original effort. However, Narcos seems too focused on the theatrics and not enough on the winning possibilities. Red Tiger fixed this aspect by bumping up the volatility, adding more features, and increasing the jackpot. All in all, the series is progressing in the right direction.
Narcos Mexico was released on March 24 2022.
