Thunderkick’s Crystal Quest follows the adventures of Gemma, a young woman who journeys to dangerous places in search of mystical crystals. Gemma’s latest trip takes her to frigid temperatures in Crystal Quest: Frostlands.
Her first two adventures, Crystal Quest: Deep Jungle and Crystal Quest: Arcane Tower, offer high-quality graphics and settings. We’ll discuss whether Frostlands lives up to, or even exceeds, these first two slots.
Crystal Quest Frostlands features 6 reels and 4,096 ways, going across a 6x4 grid. Winning combinations form when +3 matching symbols appear in adjacent reels, starting with reel 1. The “Feral Commander” is an exception, though, because he offers wins for 2+ symbols.
Thunderkick brought back the same look from the first slot. The symbols and background have the feel of 16-bit video game, which is perfectly fine by our standards.
You’ll see ice blocks and snow-covered evergreen branches on both sides the reels. As for the reels, they’re encased in ice blocks and do a good job of living up to the theme.
Our favorite Crystal Quest game from an atmosphere standpoint is Deep Jungle. However, Frostlands is at least comparable to Arcane Tower’s atmosphere and not far off from Deep Jungle visually.
Given that this game is all about crystals, a group of gems serve as lower-paying symbols. The crystals, meanwhile, offer larger payouts for wins.
A green monster and the Feral Commander round out the pay table. The commander pays the most among this group at 5x your stake for six symbols. You can win up to a maximum of 15,000x your stake when accounting for features.
A “W” that’s made of crystals serves as the wild symbol. It substitutes for all other icons to form winning combinations.
You can wager between €0.10 and €100 per spin. The €100 max bet allows for a top payout of €1.5 million.
The Crystal Quest Frostlands RTP is 96.16%, which is slightly above average. Volatility is in the high range thanks to the big maximum payout and various features covered in the next section.
Frostlands brings back some familiar features from the first two games, such as avalanche pays and free spins. However, it also adds a new wrinkle in Massive Symbols.
Symbols from winning combinations disappear from the reels. New icons fall into their places to offer more chances at winning. This avalanche effect continues until no more wins are possible.
Avalanche wins come with a progressive win multiplier, which starts at 1x and increases by +1 following each avalanche payout. In the base game, the multiplier resets at the beginning of every round.
If you’ve played either of the first two Crystal Quest slots, you’ll be familiar with the avalanche feature and multiplier. Massive symbols, however, are new to the Crystal Quest kingdom.
Any regular pay can appear as a 2x2 or 3x3 Massive Symbol. These icons don’t just appear either—they crush other symbols beneath them when falling to the bottom.
You trigger 12 free spins when landing 3 treasure chests (scatters) anywhere on the reels. You’ll receive +3 free games for each additional triggering scatter beyond three (e.g. 5 scatters = +18 free spins).
Unlike in the base game, the win multiplier doesn’t reset in between rounds. This change greatly boosts win potential in the bonus round.
If you come up empty during a free spin, then Wild Explosion will kick in. This feature causes wild symbols to explode, which, in turn, blows up all symbols (minus scatters) located vertically and horizontally from wilds. The end result is a major avalanche effect.
You’ll trigger another +3 free spins when landing two scatters during the bonus. Additional scatters on top of this will add +2 free games (e.g. 4 scatters = +10 free spins).
Crystal Quest Deep Jungle provides a great introduction to this series. It welcomes players to the series’ unique cartoon graphics, while also offering a detailed jungle background.
This game also features avalanche wins, win multipliers, free spins, and Wild Explosions. The notable difference between Deep Jungle and the sequels is mystery symbols, which all turn into the same regular pay.
Crystal Quest Arcane Tower is another quality game from Thunderkick. It offers the same features as the other slots, except for Linked Reels, which can synchronize up to 6 reels.
With the release of Crystal Quest Frostlands, it’s pretty clear that Thunderkick doesn’t plan on dramatically altering the formula in the sequels. All three games have the same win potential (15,000x), visual style, and features—outside of one unique feature in each slot.
Frostlands is like Deep Jungle and Arcane Tower in many ways. It simply transports Gemma to a new setting and swaps out the Linked Reels in Arcane Tower with Massive Symbols.
Thunderkick feels that it has a winning formula on its hands and has only made minor tweaks for each subsequent Crystal Quest slot.
If you like one of these games, then you’re probably going to appreciate them all. Assuming you were hoping to see something change from Arcane Quest to Frostlands, then you’ll be disappointed.
We fully understand Thunderkick’s position here and like what they’ve done with Crystal Quest. The win potential, graphics, and features are more than adequate in each game. The same is true of Crystal Quest Frostlands, which is another slot that’s worth playing.
We can’t help but think, however, that Thunderkick needs to shake things up at some point with this series. Maybe they could use a different format than 6 reels, 4,096 ways or change up more features.
