Chaos Crew is a five-reel, 15-payline slot from Hacksaw Gaming. Its theme revolves around two zombie-looking characters named Cranky and Sketchy.
Hacksaw takes a different approach to gaming that includes developing simple slots for mobile play. Chaos Crew is a slight departure from Hacksaw’s signature development. We’ll discuss if the changes ultimately work out and make this a worthwhile game.
Chaos Crew offers a strange setup that spreads five reels and 15 lines across a 5x5 grid. Most 5x5 games offer cluster pays. This one, on the other hand, operates like a traditional payline slot on an unconventional grid.
You earn wins by landing 3+ matching symbols in any of the paylines. All payouts must start in the first reel and move from right to left.
This game presents an off-the-wall theme that includes two weird-looking main characters and random symbols. Everything from 8-balls to butterflies land on the reels.
The soundtrack provides a mixture of mellow tunes and techno beats, which amplify at certain points. Everything from the music to the symbols do a good job of embodying the “chaos” aspect.
Chaos Crew’s theme certainly isn’t for everybody. At the very least, though, it’s unique and different from the norm.
Low-paying symbols include an 8-ball, smiley face, skull, light, and cross. High pays consist of an apple core, brain, moth, and tentacles.
The latter pays the most among this bunch at 12x your stake for five. You can win up to a maximum of 10,000x your stake when including features.
The betting range runs from €0.20 to €100 per spin. The Chaos Crew RTP is 96.3%, which is above average.
Volatility sits in the high range due to large win potential (10,000x) and lucrative features. The limited paylines (15) also force you to go through dry spells where you won’t collect any wins.
Chaos Crew only offers a couple of bonuses. The features that it does have, though, can result in big wins.
Cranky (blue character) serves as a wild symbol. He substitutes for all regular pays to form wins and also offers a random multiplier.
When appearing in a win, Cranky will multiply the payout by 2x, 3x, or 5x. If 2+ Crankys appear in a win, then their multipliers will multiply each other. For example, 2x and 5x wilds would lead to a 10x multiplier.
You trigger free spins by landing 3+ scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. This bonus starts with 3 free games and will continue until you fail to get a prize in three consecutive spins. The counter resets to three every time that you win.
You’ll notice a number above every reel. At the conclusion of free spins, these numbers are added together and multiplied by your stake size. You receive a cash payout based on the result.
The symbols are different during the bonus. Some icons actually lead to prizes and multipliers while others don’t do anything (e.g. words like “No” and “Dead”).
The symbols that do help include:
You can buy the bonus by paying 129x your stake. Purchasing the feature causes 3+ scatters to immediately land on the reels within the next round.
Strangely enough, the RTP falls from 96.3% to 95.92% during the bonus. Most slots see the payback increase when moving from the main game to the feature.
Hacksaw Gaming is slowly adding more sophistication to their slots. That said, Chaos Crew has more in common with Hacksaw’s recent efforts than its old ones (e.g. Om Nom & Stick’em).
The Respinners is another game that represents Hacksaw’s slow transition. A five-reel, 1,024-ways slot, The Respinners will respin the reels for every win involving a band member.
Chaos Crew and The Respinners are quite different from one another regarding atmosphere and theme. Again, though, they’re representative of Hacksaw’s change from simple to more-complex gaming.
Chaos Crew is a worthwhile game if you’re looking to step outside of the box. It offers unique graphics, an interesting theme, and a unique bonus.
The latter sees you score wins through reel multipliers, rather than traditional symbol payouts. The bonus round can culminate in payouts worth up to 10,000x.
Chaos Crew isn’t without its drawbacks. The 5-reel, 15-line setup doesn’t allow for many wins when considering the high volatility. You’ll find yourself waiting for several spins at a time to get any kind of payout at all.
Assuming you can look past the infrequent wins, then you might consider Chaos Crew for its abstract theme and bonus round. Otherwise, you may be frustrated by the volatility or confused by the odd theme.
