Rise of the Mountain King is a five-reel, 30-line slot from Nextgen Gaming. It revolves around a troll king and draws inspiration from Edward Greig’s Hall of the Mountain King orchestra score.
The subject and title bear similarities to Quickspin’s Hall of the Mountain King slot, which was released last year. As you’ll see below, though, Rise of the Mountain King is unique in certain ways when compared to Quickspin’s game.
This slot features five reels, 30 lines, and a standard 5x3 grid. You form wins by landing at least three matching symbols in a payline.
All winning combinations must start in the first reel and move left to right. Assuming you’ve played other five-reel payline slots, then you’ll be perfectly comfortable with this one’s gameplay.
Again, the theme is based on a famous musical score by Norwegian Edward Greig. You may not recognize the song title, but you’ve almost certainly heard it used in movies and/or commercials before.
Nextgen’s interpretation of the orchestra piece presents a long bridge leading to a mountaintop castle. The reel-less grid gives way to a beautiful view of clouds, rocky ledges, and a nighttime sky.
The bonus round, meanwhile, takes you inside of the castle, where you’ll see troll statues and a luminated pathway.
Standard symbols include an axe, princess, shield, troll, and royals (A through 9). The princess pays the most among regular icons at 13.33x your stake for five symbols.
The Mountain King serves as the wild symbol and substitutes for everything except the red gem (scatter) to form payouts. It also delivers a 16.66x prize for five symbols. You can win up to 50,000x your stake when features are included.
You can wager between €0.30 and €15 per spin with this game. The Rise of the Mountain King slot RTP is 96.31%. Assuming you use the Buy Pay feature, you’ll increase the RTP to 96.85%. Both payback figures are good when compared to the industry standard.
You trigger a King’s Respin when landing three or more Mountain King wilds anywhere on the reels. During a King’s Respin, the triggering wilds and onscreen scatters are locked into place. Therefore, you get a stronger chance at forming big payouts and triggering a bonus via scatters.
Additional wilds that land on the reels lead to more respins. This sequence continues until you either fill the screen with Mountain Kings or more new wilds appear.
A full screen of Mountain Kings pays 500x in the base game. However, it can deliver up to 50,000x during the bonus when accounting for multipliers.
You trigger the bonus round by landing three or more gems anywhere on the reels. You’ll receive 8, 9, or 10 free spins for three, four, or five scatters, respectively. You also collect a 5x, 20x, or 250x scatter payout.
The free spins start with a 5x wild multiplier. The wild multiplier only affects payouts involving the Mountain King.
Additional scatters that land during the bonus go into a Collect Meter. You receive +1 free spin for each scattesr and boost the meter. Your win multipliers increase as follows:
No limit exists on how many free spins you can earn through the extra scatters. Additionally, you can trigger King’s Respin during the bonus.
The really big payouts come at this point. With a 100x multiplier in place, you earn 1,666x for a payline full of Mountain Kings. You collect a 50,000x prize for a full screen of these wilds.
Rise of the Mountain King also boasts a gamble option. You can choose to gamble any prize after the fact. You’ll then select either a card color (double your payout) or a card suit (quadruple).
This slot offers a Buy Feature option as well. For 100x your stake, you can automatically trigger free spins. However, the Buy feature may not be available if you’re from a gaming jurisdiction that doesn’t allow it.
