Cubes 2 is a 5x5 grid slot from Hacksaw Gaming. Based on the original Cubes, it marks Hacksaw’s first-ever sequel.

The first game introduced a revolutionary format that works more like a Rubik’ Cube than a slot. We’ll discuss what new twists Cubes 2 brings to the table throughout the following review.

Gameplay and Atmosphere

On the surface, this slot presents a basic 5x5 grid setup. The grid can grow to 11x11 through consecutive wins (covered later).

Wins form when 5+ connecting symbols create a cluster. You’ll notice X’s on the four corners of the grid. Each X provides a multiplier when included in a winning combination.

As for the atmosphere, Cubes 2 features a very unique look. You’ll see a bunch of multi-colored blocks on the grid. Meanwhile, the background is darker and has lots of dimmer blocks floating around.

Upon choosing the spin button, all of the blocks shake up and fall back onto the grid. When the grid expands following wins, more blocks fly in from the edges of the screen.

Cubes 2 may not have the most-sophisticated graphics. However, its animations and overall atmosphere certainly differ from the average slot.

Symbols include six different-colored blocks, which all offer the same payouts. Regular payouts range from 0.10x your stake for a cluster of five symbols to 40x for 25+ symbols.

This sequel improves upon the amount of features offered in the original Cubes. You’ll enjoy an expanding grid, X multipliers, free spins, and Multi Color free spins.

Expanding Grid

Each win adds another layer of blocks on the outside of the grid and provides more chances to win. The grid increases in size as follows:

• 1 win = 7x7 (one extra layer of blocks)
• 2 wins = 9x9 (two extra layers)
• 3+ wins = 11x11 (three extra layers)

This effect continues until you either reach the 11x11 maximum grid or fail to net another payout. In the latter case, the grid will reset to 5x5.

X Multipliers

Any X that appears in a win will become a multiplier equivalent to the number of winning symbols. If six blocks form the win, for example, then the X will become a 6x multiplier.

When two or more X’s appear in a payout, their multipliers will add together. Assuming two X’s are in a win with seven cubes, for instance, then they’ll combine for a 14x multiplier.

Free Spins

You trigger free spins when getting 5+ winning clusters—all with different colors—in a single round. You’ll choose “mystery cubes” to reveal numbers, which add onto your free spins total (maximum of 12).

This pick’em round continues until you reveal a color. Blocks from the chosen color remain sticky for the entire bonus.

The grid doesn’t revert back to 5x5 after spins either. Instead, it stays at whatever grid size you’ve unlocked (e.g. 11x11) until free spins end.

You’ll earn an additional payout when 50+ sticky blocks of the designated color are on the grid. Available prizes include:

Multi Color Free Spins

How Does This Game Compare to the Original Cubes?

The first Cubes and Cubes 2 look almost identical to each other. The original, however, does feature a slightly different background and wilder animations during spins.

Cubes also places a single X in the middle of the grid. Contrast this to the sequel, which puts an X on each corner.

The first game has similar features, including the X multiplier, free spins, and sticky block payouts during the bonus. The only thing missing is Multi Color free games.

Cubes offers slightly higher RTP at 96.35% compared to 99.33% in Cubes 2. Of course, we can handle the sequel’s lower payback when considering that it features much bigger win potential.

Final Thoughts

Cubes 2 doesn’t look markedly unique from its processor. Nevertheless, it does have enough differences to warrant a sequel.

First off, this game trots out four X’s instead of one. The result is that you’ll enjoy more win multipliers throughout the course of play.

Cubes 2 also boasts a much larger maximum win (10,500x) than the original (3,167x). We suspect that this is the biggest reason why Hacksaw felt a sequel was due.

If you’re a fan of high volatility and more features, then you’ll certainly enjoy Cubes 2 more. It may look the same as Cubes, but it differs greatly regarding volatility and max payouts.
