Released by Quickspin in 2013, Big Bad Wolf is one of the most-popular online slots of all time. It seamlessly incorporates the Three Little Pigs story into a game with plenty of features.
Of course, Big Bad Wolf is rather old by the slots industry’s standards. Quickspin released a Christmas edition in late 2020. The Christmas version, however, doesn’t offer anything new other than the Xmas theme.
That said, Quickspin is already back with another edition in Big Bad Wolf Megaways. You can find out what this version brings to the table in the following review.
This game features a typical Megaways setup that includes 6 reels and between 324 and 117,649 ways. Reels 1 and 6 hold between 2-7 symbols. Reels 2 through 5 hold between 2-6 symbols.
Meanwhile, a special 1x4 row sits above reels 2 through 5. If all of the reels fill up, then you’ll enjoy the maximum 117,649 ways (7x7x7x7x7x7x).
You score winning combinations by landing 3+ matching symbols in adjacent reels, beginning with the first reel.
As for the atmosphere, the look of Big Bad Wolf Megaways is similar to the original. The same characters are back, including the wolf and three pigs.
A similar countryside setting can also be seen in the background. However, Quickspin has refined the graphics for the Megaways version.
Of course, the original Big Bad Wolf is still a good-looking slot by today’s standards. The Megaways variation, though, takes the visual quality to a higher level.
Low pays include royals ranging from A through J. Mid pays consist of an axe, gardening spade, and hay fork. High-paying symbols include the Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf.
The wolf pays the most among regular symbols at 50x your stake for six symbols. You can look forward to a maximum win worth 30,540x the stake. This top payout is worth much more than the original’s 1,268x max win.
A toolbox acts as the regular wild symbol. Landing on reels 2 through 4, it substitutes for regular pays to form winning combinations. This game also offers Piggy Wilds, which are covered in the features section.
You can wager between €0.20 and €100 per spin. This betting range allows for jackpots going from €6,108 (0.2 x 30,540) to €3,054,000 (100 x 30,540).
The default Big Bad Wolf Megaways RTP is 96.05%. You should be aware, however, that some casino operators may request a lower RTP figure. That said, you’ll want to check the info section to see what you’re dealing with.
The volatility is extremely high. This is a big change from the first Big Bad Wolf, which has low-to-medium volatility.
If you’ve played the original slot, then you won’t notice a big difference in the features. Cascading reels, Piggy Wilds (previously “Pigs Turn Wild”), and Blowing Down the House all return.
The difference, though, is that the Blowing Down the House bonus now offers a progressive multiplier. This multiplier is where the larger maximum payout and higher volatility come from.
The Big Bad Wolf once again huffs and puffs to blow winning symbols off the reels. New icons drop into the vacant spaces and give you more chances to win. Cascading reels continue until no new wins are possible.
Following every second cascading win in a round, one of the regular pig symbols becomes wild. The transformed pig symbol(s) remains wild until a new spin begins.
You trigger 11 free spins when landing 3 moon bonus symbols anywhere on the reels. All wins during Blowing Down the House are subject to a progressive win multiplier. The multiplier starts at 1x and increases +1 after every win.
You’ll also boost the win multiplier by collecting moon symbols. These increases happen as follows:
New to the Big Bad Wolf series, feature buy lets you purchase the bonus immediately. You pay 90x the stake to make 3 scatter symbols automatically fall on the reels. The RTP increases by 0.39% (96.44%) whenever you use feature buy.
Launching eight years after its processor, Big Bad Wolf Megaways upgrades virtually every aspect of the first game.
Of course, we’re not saying that the regular Big Bad Wolf isn’t still worth playing. However, the Megaways sequel brings this series into the present.
For starters, it offers far more ways to win, with up to 117,649 ways possible. The original, meanwhile, only has 5 reels and 25 paylines.
The Megaways version also boasts a higher top prize at 30,540x your stake. Big Bad Wolf only pays up to 1,268x the stake.
Finally, the Megaways edition has more-refined graphics. You can tell a visual difference when moving from the first game to the newest one.
The one area where the original wins out is the RTP. It features 97.34% RTP, compared to 96.05% for the Megaways sequel.
Big Bad Wolf is no doubt one of Quickspin’s greatest hits. However, it was definitely due for an upgrade.
Big Bad Wolf Megaways provides these upgrades in several areas. It features bigger potential wins, Megaways, better visual quality, and a progressive win multiplier.
You may have put Big Bad Wolf on the shelf a long time ago. It’s time to jump back into this series, though, thanks to the new edition.
The only real knock against the Megaways version is the lower RTP. Payback has dropped from 97.34% to 96.05%.
Outside of this small downside, Big Bad Wolf Megaways is definitely worth playing. You’ll especially find it interesting if you liked (like) the original.
