Top Gun has already been the central theme of a video slot before. IGT’s effort largely went unnoticed, though, so now it seems it is Playtech’s turn to try to turn this major Hollywood motion picture starring Tom Cruise into one of this year’s hottest online slots. It won’t be an easy feat. Top Gun was huge in the early 90s, but with such a long time having passed, will there still be a crowd for this hit?

Top Gun is officially licensed, so one would expect to find some of the heroes featuring in this game. However, Playtech tends to avoid plenty of movie imagery in their franchised slots, and has done the same with this one. Many of the symbols are drawn, and don’t really have that much to do with the motion picture itself. Charlie, Goose, Iceman, Jesse, and Stinger appear on the reels, but curiously enough, no Maverick (Tom Cruise). This is similar to Playtech’s Gladiator slot not featuring Maximus (Russell Crowe). This is not a good start.

Gameplay and wagering

We know that Top Gun is going to be played over 5 reels, and 243 paylines. This is quite a change for Playtech. Although we can’t pinpoint exactly what you will be allowed to stake with its maximum wager, we do know that Top Gun won’t cost you any less than 25p a spin. That is surprisingly cheap for a 243 ways to win slot. This makes it cheaper than many of Microgaming 243 ways to slots, and that’s always a plus.

Titans of the Sun Special features

At any point in the base game, a Dogfight Wilds bonus can be randomly triggered. When it is, fighter jets will fire wilds on to the reels, with up to 15 possible at any one time. Although wilds aren’t exactly rare in this slot, they don’t tend to cough up the goods unless they appear in this particular feature.

A free spins bonus - known as the Danger Zone Free Games feature (after the hit Kenny Loggins song which featured in the film) - can offer you 8 free games, with players more likely to trigger the Dogfight Wilds bonus in this feature.

Top Gun may not have a surplus of special features working for it, but Playtech are perhaps banking on the film’s success to spur on the popularity of this video slot. I wouldn’t count on it. The film is old now, and the younger generation of gamblers may not be as familiar with the hit movie as the older ones.

Launch date and final thoughts

Playtech have not officially given a launch date for Top Gun. Their recent YouTube video preview merely states that Top Gun is coming to your favourite Playtech casino, soon. In all likelihood, we will see this slot released this month, but it probably won’t be until the end of November. You will certainly be able to earn your wings before Christmas, though.
